Vapor Testing and Mitigation
Vapor and Air Sampling to Meet Updated DEQ Regulations
In June 2023, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) updated how vapor intrusion at cleanup sites is evaluated to meet the current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) guidelines and current screening levels. These updates mark a substantial change in cleanup protocols, which are expected to have a substantial impact on environmental remediation efforts in the state. In an evolving regulatory landscape, Soil Solutions is prepared to meet the increased demand for more mitigation systems and a higher frequency of required deed restrictions.
A vapor mitigation system is an engineered solution designed to prevent the migration of harmful vapors, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or hazardous gases, from subsurface sources (e.g., contaminated soil or groundwater) into buildings or occupied spaces. It typically includes a combination of technologies, such as vapor barriers, venting systems, and sub-slab depressurization, to create a barrier that intercepts and redirects vapors away from structures, ensuring the safety of occupants and preventing indoor air quality issues and health risks associated with exposure to these contaminants. Vapor mitigation systems are commonly employed in environments with known or potential vapor intrusion concerns, such as industrial sites, properties with petroleum contamination present, or areas with historical contamination.
